During the meeting of the Higginsville Board of Aldermen on Monday, December 2, Chief of Police Shawn Smith was honored for his 20 years of service.
Smith suffered a work-related injury, and he has decided to begin his retirement effective Friday, December 6.
A release from City Administrator Jeanette Dobson reads: “I have had the privilege of working with Shawn throughout his career with the city and have witnessed many of his accomplishments within the city of Higginsville’s Police Department. We wish Shawn the best in his retirement. It is well deserved!”
Mayor Bill Kolas’ recommendation to appoint a new Chief of Police was approved by aldermen.

Dobson also said the board saw a demonstration from the police department’s new K-9 Officer, Loki- a 1-1/2-year-old German Shepherd, during the meeting.
In other news, the board approved the appointment of Marshall Stewart to the Industrial Development Authority. He will fill an unexpired term through January 2021.
