On Monday, August 17, Missouri Department of Conservation agents reports of a couple of fish kill flushing into the Missouri River from area creeks.
The larger of the two kills was coming from Wakenda Creek, the second, which appeared to be smaller, was at Big Creek. After an investigation conducted by Fisheries Biologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation Thomas Huffmon, it was determined that these fish kills appear to have been caused by low oxygen levels linked to an algae bloom.
Huffmon reported that 99% of the fish killed were Asian carp. The fish are currently flushing out into the Missouri River. The fish kill appears to be at the peak which means river users should see a decline in floating fish in next couple days. The fish killed will however float downstream possibly creating the more reports of fish kills along the river.
