An established restaurant in Saline County will be closing after this season.

According to Catalpa’s owner, it will not be open next season.

The owner says the Arrow Rock Board of Architectural Review turned down three versions of her plan to add space for a pizza kitchen and additional, permanent and safe, outdoor seating. The owner says she needs to redistribute seating in order to survive. Three different plans have been submitted, and all three have been rejected.

The owner says she received letters from the BAR that included this excerpt: “The proposed changes to the residence would, in the BAR’s estimation, completely destroy the present characteristics of what is a unique, quaint and charming little residence located within a historic residential district. The proposed changes are more akin to something seen in a “resort area” not in a historic residential area in Arrow Rock.”

The owner says she has been informed that if she starts building anything she will get slapped with an injunction, and she is not going to get into a big legal battle with her own community. She says she is thinking of maybe setting up a cooking school at the restaurant.

The owner says the restaurant will remain open until Saturday, October 31.
