A 38-year-old inmate at a jail facility in the KMMO listening area died on Monday, December 7.
According to a news release from the Pettis County Sheriff’s Office, at 12:48 p.m., Pettis County Jail staff members found a white male in the jail unconscious and unresponsive in his cell.
Officers made entry into the cell, where they located the victim lying on his bunk not breathing nor having a heartbeat. Officers immediately initiated lifesaving measures, and Pettis County Ambulance District and Sedalia Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the scene. Advanced lifesaving measures were attempted, however, the victim- whose name has not been released at this time- could not be resuscitated.
Pettis County Coroner Robert “Skip” Smith responded to the scene, and a death investigation was initiated. There were no immediate signs of injury or trauma to the victim, and the death is believed to be related to a possible medical issue.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The investigation into the death is open and active.
