
Two Newton, Iowa, residents are facing drug charges after a traffic stop in Saline County on January 22.
According to a report from a Saline County Deputy, he conducted a traffic stop of a speeding vehicle on northbound U.S. Highway 65. During the traffic stop, the passenger provided multiple versions of identification and showed signs of impairment by a stimulant narcotic. When the passenger made statements about narcotics to be present in the vehicle, a search of the vehicle was conducted. The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested for possession of a controlled substance- methamphetamine- and transported to the Saline County Sheriff’s Department.
Both defendants were arraigned on Tuesday, January 26.
Court documents say 35-year-old Jamie Lea Chance and 63-year-old James Edward Keith each is charged with a Class D Felony for Possession of a Controlled Substance and a drug-related misdemeanor. Chance is charged with an additional drug-related misdemeanor and Keith a driving-related misdemeanor.
Chance remains in custody. His bond remains at $7,500 cash or surety. A Confined Docket Hearing in his case is set for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3 at Saline County Circuit Court.
Keith posted $7,500 surety bond on Thursday, January 28. A Counsel Status Hearing in this case is set for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3 at Saline County Circuit Court.
