UPDATED AT 8:25 A.M.
In a phone call to Evergy this morning, a spokesperson clarified that rolling blackouts have not started.
A news release says Evergy notified the Pettis County Sheriff’s office said that customers should expect power outages that started at midnight and will last through 11 a.m. today. Again, those have not started.
The Evergy spokesperson said right now Evergy is continuing to urge residents to conserve as much energy as possible to avoid the rolling blackouts. The spokesperson added that the particular areas are hard to pinpoint right now, but the need to conserve energy is region wide. Evergy serves customers in both Missouri and Kansas.
If rolling blackouts have to occur, the outage should last between 30 and 60 minutes. If the power outage lasts longer than 60 minutes, you can report the extended outage to Evergy Customer Care at (888) 544-4852 or directly on Evergy’s website- www.evergy.com.
Another Evergy representative says customers who have medical equipment do not receive advanced notice. However, when Evergy is notified that it has to implement the outages, Evergy reaches out to medical customers via its automated phone-call system. He says Evergy has been implementing these phone calls for the past two days. He says because of the widespread nature of the outages in the two-state territory, there isn’t an opportunity to opt out of an outage. He says they watch the areas to make sure hospitals and other emergency facilities that they don’t lose power.
Again, he says customers do not have the option to opt out of a power outage.
