A Sarasota, Florida, man charged with several felonies following a traffic stop in Lafayette County on April 26 is due in court on Monday, July 19.

According to Waverly police, an officer observed a vehicle driving carelessly on Highway 24.

The driver- 31 year-old Chad Straughn- had an active warrant for his arrest out of Sarasota. When the officer attempted to take Straughn into custody, he resisted and attempted to flee on foot.

As a result of a search of the vehicle, authorities say they found numerous illegal drugs, several pieces of drug paraphernalia and a loaded 9mm pistol.

Straughn is charged with a Class C Felony for Trafficking Drugs in the Second Degree; a Class D Felony for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm; a Class E Felony for Resisting or Interfering With Arrest for a Felony; and two drug related misdemeanors. He pleaded not guilty on May 17, and the court ordered no bond. A request for change of venue was filed on May 22.

His case has been bound over to the trial division for a plea/trial-setting hearing at 9 a.m. at Lafayette County Circuit Court.
