Stone Hill Winery was awarded top honors at the 2021 Missouri Wine Competition held July 13-15 in Columbia. The Missouri Governor’s Cup and Best of Class dry red was won by Stone Hill Winery’s 2019 Chambourcin, while the winery’s 2019 Norton was awarded the C.V. Riley Award for best Norton.

The C.V. Riley Award recognizes the best Norton produced in Missouri. C.V. Riley, Missouri’s first state-appointed entomologist, is accredited with his role in saving the French wine industry as he discovered the state’s pest resistant rootstock.

During the Missouri Wine Competition, eight judges blindly tasted 226 wines during the three-day competition. Judges awarded 40 gold, 90 silver and 57 bronze medals.

The Missouri Governor’s Cup winner was selected from the 11 Best of Class champions:
o Sparkling: Stone Hill Winery – Demi-Sec;
o Dry White: Noboleis Vineyards – 2019 Dry Vignoles;
o Semi-Dry White: Stone Hill Winery – 2020 Traminette;
o Sweet White: Les Bourgeois Vineyards – Moscato;
o Dry Red: Stone Hill Winery – 2019 Chambourcin;
o Semi-Dry Red: Stone Hill Winery – 2019 Ozark Hellbender;
o Dry Rosé: Stone Hill Winery – Dry Rosé;
o Fruit: Adam Puchta Winery – Jazz Berry;
o Dessert: Augusta Winery – Fine Old Tawny;
o Late Harvest/Ice Wine: Augusta Winery – 2020 Icewine; and
o Distilled: Montelle Winery – Napoleon Missouri Brandy.

A label competition accompanied traditional judging in honor of Missouri’s Bicentennial celebration. This portion of the competition was designed to recognize wineries who have stand-out labels considering information provided, design and overall bottle appearance. Ten label winners were awarded in: Traditional, Contemporary, Bicentennial, Series, Alternative Packaging and People’s Choice.

o Bicentennial Label: Les Bourgeois Vineyards – Rocheport Reserve Aged 20 Years;
o Traditional Label: Stone Hill Winery – 2015 Port;
o Contemporary Label: KC Wineworks – 2017 Chambourcin;
o Alternative Packaging: KC Wineworks – Show-Me Sangria;
o Best Wine Series: Edg-Clif Farms and Vineyard – 2019 Sunset, 2020 Chambourcin Rosé, 2020 Soleil, 2020 Vidal Blanc, 2020 Vignoles; and
o People’s Choice Award: Small Batch Winery – Cardinal Red.

The winning wines will be on display at the 2021 Missouri State Fair from August 12-22 in Sedalia.
