An area resident claims she was scammed out of hundreds of dollars by a St. Joseph woman.

A probable-cause statement says on May 10, 2021, the alleged victim said she was scammed out of $850 by Candace L. Cosby online through Facebook Messenger. The woman said she wanted to buy two Yorkie puppies from Cosby and first sent a $300 deposit via PayPal. She said she was contacted by another woman and said the other woman asked for another $25 per puppy to get health certificates and shots from her veterinarian. The alleged victim said she sent the remaining $550 to Cosby via PayPal on May 8.

On May 9, the alleged victim said she drove to St. Joseph to pick up the puppies, and the two women failed to show. The alleged victim was blocked on Facebook by Cosby and the other woman, and when she tried to call and/or text the phone number provided, she was unable to reach either of them. The alleged victim said she never received the puppies.

Court documents say Cosby is charged with a felony of stealing $750 or more. Bond has not been set yet.

Cosby’s initial hearing is pending at Carroll County Circuit Court.

The other subject has not been formally charged.
