An inmate being extradited from the Lafayette County jail managed to escape, but was recaptured later.

During an inmate transfer with a private extradition company an inmate, Silas Cooper, was able to escape custody at 7:48 p.m. February 12. When the private extradition officer was exiting the Lafayette County Jail, Cooper ran past the private extradition officer, through an outside door escaping the jail. Lafayette County jailers pursued Cooper on foot, but he was able to elude them. Lafayette County Deputies and Lexington Police Officers immediately responded to set up a perimeter.

Multiple law enforcement agencies including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Higginsville PD, Odessa PD and Wellington PD sent officers to the scene. The US Marshals, FBI and Kansas City MO PD also responded to offer assistance. Cooper was found at approximately 10:30 pm a short distance from the jail, hiding under an automobile.

Cooper was extradited from a location outside Missouri for a felony Lafayette County warrant. Charges listed on the felony warrant included Vehicle Hijacking, Kidnapping and Stealing of a Motor Vehicle. A Probable Cause Affidavit will be sent to the Lafayette County Prosecutor to review the incident.
