The Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested a subject for trafficking drugs through Lafayette County on Tuesday, April 2.

According to the MSHP, authorities conducted a traffic stop on I-70 for a lane and window tint violation. Authorities made contact with the driver, identified as Sheili Diaz Nieves, and observed indicators of suspicious activity.

Diaz Nieves denied a search of the vehicle, causing authorities to call in a K9 unit from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, which alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.

Authorities searched the vehicle and found 40 vacuum sealed packages containing a white powdery substance, which was later confirmed to be cocaine. The total weight of all the packages was 88 pounds.

Diaz Nieves was charged with a felony for trafficking drugs over the statutory amount in the first degree. Diaz Nieves was arraigned on Wednesday, April 3, and entered a plea of not guilty.

A hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 10 at Lafayette County Circuit Court.
