The late heroics were not enough Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, as the Kansas City Royals fell 6-5 in ten innings to the Seattle Mariners.

JP Crawford needed just four pitches from Cole Ragans to get the Mariners on the board first, but the Royals drew even with Kyle Isbel’s sacrifice bunt in the fifth. The Mariners would add two in the seventh, but MJ Melendez made it a three-all game with two outs in the ninth.

However, the Mariners would respond in the tenth, with a pair of singles driving in three runs. Hunter Renfroe provided a two run home run for the Royals in the bottom half, but the Royals could not complete the sweep.

James McArthur gave up the three runs in the extra frame (two earned) to take the loss, while Cole Ragans completed six innings of work for a quality start. After giving up the home run, Ragans allowed just two more hits and one walk while striking nine out. Despite the blown save, Mike Baumann was credited with his third win of the season, claiming three strikeouts in the ninth.

The Royals wrap up another series with a four-game deficit to Cleveland in the AL Central, but enjoy a four-and-a-half game cushion in the wild card standings with a 39-27 record. The AL East-leading New York Yankees will arrive at The K for a four-game series beginning Monday evening at 7:10. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 on KMMO.
