Back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning put the Chicago Cubs up over the St Louis Cardinals, en route to an 8-3 loss for the Redbirds on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second when Pedro Pagés singled to left field, bringing in Brendan Donovan and Nolan Arenado. Batting ninth in the order, center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong delivered a solo shot in the third to put the Cubs on the board, then followed Tomás Nido’s home run in the fifth with one out with another home run, putting the Cubs up for good. They would repeat the back-to-back feat in the eighth, with Ian Happ and Christopher Morel providing the shots. Morel also ended up with a two home run game after going deep in the sixth. Alec Burleson provided the Cardinals’ final run in the sixth.
Miles Mikolas took the loss, his eighth on the season. He went 5.1 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out two. The Cardinals are now 50-46, 4.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. They’re still in the second wild card spot, a game ahead of the Mets and two games ahead of Arizona and San Diego. After the All-Star Break, the Cardinals visit Atlanta in a battle of the top two wild card teams. The three-game series will start Friday.
