A trade-depleted and historically abysmal Chicago White Sox squad nearly had their second win of the season against the Kansas City Royals on Monday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.

That was until Bobby Witt Jr came to the plate with two outs in the top of the eighth.  On the first pitch, Witt belted a grand slam that flipped the game in the Royals’ favor, posting an 8-5 win. The grand slam was Witt’s fourth hit of the game, including a double. Witt was set up by back-to-back home runs earlier in the inning from Hunter Renfroe and MJ Melendez.

The White Sox had started the eighth with a 5-2 lead, including an RBI double from former Royal Andrew Benintendi in the sixth and an Andrew Vaughn home run in the seventh. Despite giving up that home run, Chris Stratton was credited with the win, going 1.2 innings and allowing two hits while striking out one. James McArthur secured his 18th save of the season.

The Royals are 58-49 and remain in the third wild card spot, one game ahead of Boston while 5.5 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central. Game two of the series at Chicago is Tuesday, with pregame on KMMO-FM 102.9 at 6:30 p.m. and first pitch at 7:10.

Before the game, the Royals completed a trade with the Texas Rangers, acquiring right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen for left-handed reliever Walter Pennington. Lorenzen is 5-6 in 19 appearances for the defending champion Rangers, posting a 3.81 ERA. The trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. Central Time.
