Darlene Margaret Peters, 88, of Waverly, MO, died Monday, September 30, 2024.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2024, at Waverly United Methodist Church with Pastor Andrew Sanders and William W. Harlow officiating. Burial will follow in Waverly Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Born September 24, 1936, in Malta Bend, MO, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Virgil Brownfield and Margaret Elizabeth Widel Brownfield. Darlene was raised in the rural Malta Bend area and was a 1954 graduate of Malta Bend High School. On August 22, 1954, she married Richard Jackson “Jack” Peters and they were married for 66 years until his death on June 26, 2021.
Darlene’s passion was her love for horses. She bred and showed Missouri Fox Trotter’s for many years and traveled all over Missouri where she and her beloved horse, Major, won numerous trophies and ribbons. Darlene attended 4-J Big Piney Horse Camp for 49 years.
Darlene was a longtime member of Waverly United Methodist Church where she was the choir director and pianist, and then became a member of the choir in her later years. Having a great appreciation and love for music, Darlene was a member of Marshall Community Chorus.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority-Delta Sigma Chapter, Daughters of 1812, and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Darlene is survived by two daughters, Susan Harbison (Dave) of Nixa and Carolyn Campbell of Waverly; four grandchildren: Jeff Harbison (Laura) of Cameron, Brian Harbison (Kate) of Nixa, Scott Campbell (Kristina) of Waverly and Christina Campbell of Waverly; nine great-grandchildren: Connor and Cooper Harbison, Britton, Brinley and Knox Harbison, Ethan, Marie, James and William Campbell; along with nieces, nephews and other extended family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Darlene was preceded in death by one sister, Judy Brownfield who died in infancy; one brother, Donnie Brownfield; and a son-in-law, Jeff Campbell.
