The rear corner of a building in Fayette’s Downtown Historic Square collapsed Monday afternoon, leading to quick action from the city and the building’s owner.
The building is located on North Main Street, across the street from the Howard County Courthouse. Fayette Mayor Greg Stidham says the building dates back to 1884, and the collapse was likely due to deterioration from this winter’s recent storms. Despite the collapse of the building’s southeast corner, the building appears to be standing just fine. Stidham says the city’s priority is to prevent any further damage to other buildings nearby.
Emergency repairs to the structure are expected to made this week. The city hopes to have an engineer on site to inspect the building by the beginning of next week.
