Jac Caglianone went four-for-four, including a double, to lead the Royals offense, but it was two-run home runs from Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Jr that bookended the scoring in Sunday’s 7-5 win at Rate Park in Chicago, denying the White Sox a sweep.
The Royals claimed 16 hits, with Jonathan India going three-for-five and three other Royals each having a pair of hits. However, the White Sox prevented the Royals from running away with the game, limiting the Royals to a three-for-12 mark with runners in scoring position, and turning five double plays, including an unassisted one by Tim Elko in the third.
The White Sox scored first with Miguel Vargas’ two-run line drive over the center field fence. The Royals responded with Perez’ two-run blast in the fourth, then took the lead in the seventh with an RBI double from Jonathan India and single by Maikel Garcia. India added another RBI with a single in the ninth, before Witt brought him home with his two-run round-tripper. The game was not out of reach for the White Sox, who scored on a bases-loaded walk, a single, and then a forceout play for the first out of the ninth. Those three runs were charged to Trevor Richards, who failed to record an out and gave up two hits and two walks. Carlos Estévez recorded all three outs, allowing the hit and another walk, to record his 19th save of the year.
The home run in the first was the only hit Michael Lorenzen allowed in his six-inning start. He conceded a pair of walks but struck out seven to pick up his fourth win of the year. Tyler Alexander was charged with the loss for the White Sox, giving up five hits and one walk while striking out two in his three innings in relief of starter Mike Vasil.
The Royals avoided the sweep to improve to 34-32 on the season, 8.5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central. They also remain a game-and-a-half behind the Minnesota Twins for the third wild card. After an off day, the Royals return to The K for the start of a three-game series Tuesday against the New York Yankees.
