The Kansas City Current began righting the ship after a rough start to their season, avenging last season’s playoff upset with a 2-1 comeback win over Gotham FC on Saturday, Apr. 4 at CPKC Stadium.
Forward Temwa Chawinga made her return to the lineup after her stellar second season was cut short just before last season’s playoffs. She immediately made an impact when she recorded the assist on Debinha’s equalizer in the 37th minute. Michelle Cooper netted the game-winner in the second half, when Ally Sentnor intercepted a loose ball and sent the ball forward to Cooper on the right wing, drilling her strike past Gotham’s Ann-Katrin Berger. Jaedyn Shaw recorded Gotham’s lone goal in the 29th minute, while the Current’s Lorena recorded three saves.
The Current now sit tenth in the league on nine points. With the NWSL on pause for the next two weeks, the Current will host its Teal Rising Cup. The tournament will begin Thursday evening with Mexico’s Club América facing Palmeiras from Brazil, followed by the Current battling Brazilian side Corinthians SC.

Sporting Kansas City fell behind from the opening shot, eventually falling on the road Saturday, Apr. 4 to Real Salt Lake 3-1.
Diego Luna rocketed the first shot of the game past Sporting’s John Pulskamp in the fourth minute. That would be the only goal of the half, as Pulskamp recorded two of his four saves before the break. Real would extend their lead in the 55th minute off a counterattacked finished by Sergi Solans. SKC pulled the goal back four minutes later with a half-volley from Dejan Joveljic, his fourth goal of the season. The hosts restored their two-goal advantage with a shot from Zavier Gozo that found the top corner of the net.
It was Sporting KC’s first game since announcing the departure of sporting director Mike Burns, as part of the rebuild underway by new general manager David Lee and head coach Raphael Wicky. SKC remain in the basement of the Western Conference on four points. They return to Sporting Park next Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. to face the San Jose Earthquakes.

St Louis is no stranger to delivering heartbreak at Citi Field, and Brendan McSorley was the latest as he netted the equalizer in stoppage time for Saint Louis City SC to end Saturday night’s game 1-1 against New York City FC.
McSorley turned a pass into the penalty box into a flick header that bounced off the outstretched arm of NYCFC keeper Matt Freese. The goal drew St Louis even after Hannes Wolf’s 51st-minute score put the hosts on the board.
Roman Bürki recorded six saves for St Louis, who now sit 13th in the Western Conference on five points. The draw knocked NYCFC out of first in the Eastern Conference, as Nashville now have the top spot. St Louis City remain on the road next weekend, when they visit FC Dallas.
