After nearly six decades at the Truman Sports Complex, the Kansas City Royals will return to the downtown area.
Royals Chairman John Sherman joined Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas, Governor Mike Kehoe, and Hallmark Cards chairman Don Hall Jr on Wednesday, Apr. 22 to announce the franchise will team up with Hallmark to build their next stadium. The new stadium will go along Gillham Road, where Hallmark’s headquarters currently stand. Sherman says that the public-private partnership, including use of the Show-Me Sports Investment Act passed by the Missouri General Assembly last summer, will fund the three-billion dollar project. The project is expected to incorporate and revitalize Crown Center’s mixed-use development neighborhood, centering the 85-acre development on the new ballpark and a reimagined headquarters for Hallmark.
The new stadium location is near Liberty Memorial, which will allow fans to arrive at the ballpark after riding Amtrak’s two routes that stop at Union Station, and use Kansas City’s streetcar to travel from the stadium to the City Market or the Plaza. The Royals have called Kauffman Stadium home since it opened in 1973, after spending their first four seasons at the former Municipal Stadium at 22nd and Brooklyn. The team’s lease at The K will end after the 2031 season, at the same time the Chiefs are expected to jump across the state line to their new stadium in Wyandotte County, Ks.
