The St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff allowed just three base runners and JJ Wetherholt cleared the bases on a little league grand slam, giving the Redbirds a 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres Friday night at Petco Park.

Michael McGreevy pitched a gem, allowing just a hit and two walks over six scoreless innings of work, to go along with a career-high nine strikeouts.

The Cardinals scored all six of their runs in the fifth inning, when the team loaded the bases for Wetherholt. Wetherholt singled to right field, but the ball snuck under the glove of Fernando Tatis Jr. in right, clearing the bases and allowing Wetherholt to race around the bases and score. The play was officially ruled a single and a three-base error. St. Louis added to the lead with a Nolan Gorman single and a sac fly from Masyn Winn.

Gordon Graceffo pitched two perfect innings and Ryne Stanek tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to put the finishing touches on the shut-out victory.

The Cardinals improve to 23-15 on the season. They’ll send Dustin May to the mound today for game three of the series. First pitch is at 6:15 p.m.
