The Sedalia City Council will give competing proposals a second look Monday, May 18 as to which landfill the city will take their collected garbage.

The council will have two different ordinances before them when they meet at 6:30 p.m. at the municipal building, one from each of the bids submitted over the spring after the city terminated their current contract with the Central Missouri Landfill operated by GFL Environmental just outside Sedalia. While GFL submitted a bid of $31 per ton, the council initially selected the bid from Show-Me Landfill outside Warrensburg for $33 per ton, saying that despite the added distance, sanitation crews found turnaround times and conditions at the location improved. Mayor Traves Williams vetoed the agreement during his first week in office, which the council upheld at their May 4 meeting.

The council will also consider a budget amendment accepting funds from the sale of a hangar at the Sedalia Regional Airport, and whether to place on the Aug. 4 ballot a proposal to reduce the license tax on gross receipt from the sale of electric energy and power within the city.

Sedalia’s council meeting will feature a change, moving public comment to the beginning of the meeting. The council meeting will also take place while the Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education has their monthly meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Smith-Cotton High School commons. The board meeting was moved up because of next month’s Memorial Day holiday, and will feature a number of donations being made to the district. The board will also consider three final change orders from Klassen Construction, along with a certificate of substantial completion for the district’s new central office at 1700 South Lafayette.

Elsewhere, several area city governments are meeting Monday to take care of city business and multiple action items. The Concordia Board of Aldermen is set to meet at 5 p.m., with major items including the the trash service contract with RTS Waste Services and consideration for the replacement of the AC unit at the Aquatic Center Office. The Carrollton Town Council and Higginsville Board of Aldermen will each meet at 6 p.m., while the Boonville City council also meets on Monday, with that meeting to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, the city councils in Marshall, Moberly and Slater will meet at 6 p.m., as will the Knob Noster Board of Aldermen.
