The Fayette Board of Aldermen denied a zoning change request from the Howard County Ambulance District during its meeting on Tuesday, May 12.
The district is hoping to construct a new ambulance building in a residential area on Morrison Street. City Administrator Deanna Cooper says the request was first approved by Planning and Zoning before being rejected by Aldermen at Tuesday’s meeting. She notes that there was also al lot of push back from residents during a public hearing held earlier this year.
Cooper says the board rejected the request with a 5-0 vote, with one board member abstaining. In a letter addressed to Mayor Greg Stidham and the City of Fayette, The Ambulance District states it is a political subdivision exercising its Chapter 190 Governmental Powers and that the city’s local zoning provisions do not give the city authority to to veto the facility. With that in mind, the district says it intends to proceed with the proposed ambulance base. A copy of the ambulance district’s statement is posted below.
In other news, aldermen gave approval to a water line relocation on the intersection of Cleveland and Lucky Street. Cooper says the work is part of the city’s $1 million street repair project.
The board also accepted the financial audit for fiscal year 2021-2022 and elected Michelle Ishmael to serve as Mayor Pro Tem. The board’s next meeting is set for Tuesday, May 26.
