Sedalia’s city council took no action on either submitted bid from landfills willing to accept the city’s solid waste collections, leading city staff to prepare to field fresh bids.
The council voted Monday, May 18 to pull the agenda item where bids from GFL Enviromental’s Central Missouri Landfill outside Sedalia and Republic Services’ Show-Me Landfill outside Warrensburg were once again up for consideration. Representatives for both companies were in attendance, including Ben Seiferman with GFL, who provided information to the council concerning the current contract that the city will exit in July after submitting a notice of termination. City administrator Matthew Wirt tells KMMO News that with the council taking the information under advisement, the city will instead pursue a new round of bids with different terms.
.
Wirt says the updated bid package will ask for a one-year contract instead of a three-year deal. He says the goal is to maintain affordable rates for residents.
Two residents addressed the council at the beginning of Monday’s meeting, both of them critical of the council’s initial decision in April to switch to the landfill in Warrensburg. Mayor Traves Williams vetoed the agreement shortly after taking office, which the council sought to override at their May 4 meeting but fell one vote short.
