There were three proposed parking ordinances discussed during the meeting of the Marshall City Council on Monday, December 21.

One of the ordinances states that there will be no parking allowed along the sides of a certain portion of East Slater Street. Ward 2 Councilman Chuck Hines said he is not in favor of having a no parking zone there.

Ward 3 Councilman Charlie Guthrey said it is important to have something like this to keep traffic flowing, especially due to the presence of Spainhower Primary School and the prospect of another school being placed on the property formerly known as the Marshall Habilitation Center in the future.

Police Chief Mike Donnell says the only reason he brought this to the council is that he has had complaints from the school district and school board members that there are vehicles being parked on both sides of the street, hindering traffic flow.

City Administrator David Haugland pointed out the school district has asked for a school zone to be placed at that intersection, which- if approved by the council- will affect North Lincoln Avenue and East Slater Street.

In the end, the council voted to approve both readings of the ordinance by a 7 to 1 count to not allow parking on either side of East Slater Street from North Lincoln to North Bagby Avenues.
