Close Up Shot Focused on Yellow Tape Showing Text "Police Line Do Not Cross". Restricted Area of a Crime Scene

A suspect is in custody after an early morning explosion reported Monday, May 4 at an Odessa residence.

The Odessa Police Department says first responders were called to the 200 block of East Otway for what they initially believed was a natural gas incident. Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office soon determined that the explosion was instead caused by chemicals associated with an improvised explosive device, and began an evacuation of nearby residents. State and federal agents spent the day processing the site to ensure no further hazards remains on the scene, and the all clear was given around 7 p.m. Monday. Police arrested the single occupant of the home, who had been uninjured in the initial blast, and transported them to the Lafayette County Jail pending formal review by the Lafayette County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Bomb Squad, assisted Odessa and Lafayette County first responders at the scene.
