The St Louis Cardinals continue to fuel the the tarp-off craze at Busch Stadium, this time overcoming a blown save to walk off the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-6 on Tuesday, May 19 in ten innings.
Cardinals reliever Riley O’Brien had his fourth blown save of the season when he loaded the bases with no one out. Marcell Ozuna scored one of the runners when he grounded into a double play, allowing Konnor Griffin to advance to third. Griffin would then score on Spencer Horwitz’ single to left field. George Soriano kept the Pirates off the board on the tenth, setting up Iván Herrera’s three-run shot to left-center field to walk it off for the Redbirds, with many young fans in attendance once again rallying the home team by “tarping it off” and waving their shirts in the air to celebrate.
The Cardinals had early reasons to celebrate, opening the scoring with JJ Wetherholt’s home run in the third that made it a 2-0 lead. Nolan Gorman hit into a double play in the fourth, but was able to bring home Alec Burleson on the play. Pittsburgh struck back in the fifth, taking the lead with four runs after a wild pitch, two-run double by Bryan Reynolds, and single by Oneil Cruz. Solo home runs by Gorman in the sixth and Burleson in the eighth restored the Cardinals’ two-run lead.
Matthew Liberatore went 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine. Mitch Keller lasted into the sixth inning for Pittsburgh, allowing four runs on four hits with one walk and three punchouts. Mason Montgomery failed to record an out in his relief appearance for Pittsburgh, taking the loss.
The Cardinals are now tied with the Cubs for second in the NL Central, a half-game behind Milwaukee for the lead. Michael McGreevy will get the start Wednesday for St Louis against Carmen Mlodzinski. First pitch is at 6:45 p.m.
