A five-year hiatus from coaching will soon come to an end for Mark Turgeon, as the former Maryland and Wichita State skipper will return to the benches as the new coach of the Kansas City Roos.

UMKC announced Sunday, Feb. 1 that Turgeon will take over the men’s basketball program next season, when current coach Marvin Menzies steps aside at the end of the current season. Turgeon most recently coached at Maryland, guiding the Terrapins to the Sweet 16 in 2016 and a share of the Big Ten title in 2020. However, a lackluster start to the 2021 season saw the Kansas native leave College Park, succeeded by fellow Jayhawk alum Danny Manning. Turgeon also coached Wichita State to a Sweet 16 appearance in 2006 and spent four seasons coaching at Texas A&M before moving to Maryland.

Turgeon has a coaching record of 471-272 with ten NCAA tournament appearances. He’ll take over a Roos program that has had no tournament appearances and just 11 winning seasons since joining NCAA Division I in 1987.
