A bases-clearing double by Masyn Winn to left field scored three runs in the top of the tenth, as the St Louis Cardinals swept the Houston Astros 7-5 on Sunday, Apr. 19 at Daikan Park.

The Cardinals took advantage of two miscues by the Astros with one out in the extra inning. Jordan Walker reached on a fielding error at third base, then loaded the bases when Ramón Urías was hit by a pitch. Winn connected on an 0-1 pitch from Bryan King to score the winning runs, also picking up his third hit of the day. The Astros threatened in the tenth with a leadoff single, but the Cardinals were able to get the runner out at home on a fielder’s choice. Jose Altuve singled in a run with two outs, but Gordon Graceffo was able to strike Christian Walker out for his first save of the year.

Houston had scored in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly from Carlos Correa. The Cardinals scored four runs in the fourth, starting with a bases-loaded walk to Victor Scott II, followed by a two-RBI single for JJ Wetherholt and RBI single by Iván Herrera. The Astros waited until the eighth to respond, when Yordan Alvarez hit his tenth home run of the season. Later in the inning, Isaac Paredes hit a single to right field that brought home Altuve and Christian Walker, tying the game. Altuve went 3-for-5 to lead the Astros offense.

Riley O’Brien was tagged with his first blown save of the season, but struck out two batters in the ninth to claim his third win of the year. Matthew Liberatore recorded a quality start, allowing one run on three hits and two walks in six innings, striking out four.

The Cardinals are a half-game behind the Reds for the NL Central lead, sitting at 13-8. They go to Miami for the start of a three-game series against the Marlins. Michael McGreevy will have the start against Max Meyer. First pitch is at 5:40 p.m.
