The former Holden official accused of making unauthorized purchases on a city-issued credit card is scheduled to go on trial in September.

A judge in Johnson County has scheduled a jury trial beginning Sept. 14 for 37-year-old Trista Garrett, who is charged with identity theft and stealing by appropriating at least $25,000 of property. According to court documents, investigators were tipped off when Garrett had allegedly used a city-issued credit card at a hair salon in Pleasant Hill in October 2025. Garrett, who was the city’s treasurer at the time, told Holden police that the purchase was an accident. An investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office found that a number of purchases on the card had been flagged by the city’s bank on a list of, “spending pattern exceptions”. Detectives said the list was 23 pages long and included 984 transaction dating back to May 2025 that they allege were not related to official city business, totaling over $120,000.

Garrett pleaded not guilty to the charges and posted bond of $10,000 cash shortly after her arrest in November. A case review is scheduled for June 8, with a pre-trial conference set for Aug. 31.
