Today is National Take Your Dog to Work Day. Since many of us are still working remotely – take your dog to work day is literally every day for a lot of people.
If you are still working remotely with your furry companion and the backyard is your office these days – here are five pet-friendly backyard safety tips from Trupanion, a leader in medical insurance for pets, to keep everyone safe…and productive.
Keep the plants and flowers pet-friendly
It’s the great outdoors, so your pets may want to explore. For this reason, consider doing a little digging and research the best pet-friendly plants to have in your yard.
Beware of lilies, sago palm, tulips, daffodils, and oleander as they are harmful to pets. The last thing you want is an unexpected trip to the veterinarian with your best friend.
Provide a space to rest and play
A pet-friendly backyard is a great way to let your best friend to adventure, play, and rest. Consider providing your pet with items like a cover or awning over their pet bed, fan, and outdoor toys.
Also, for the ultimate dog yard consider adding features like a dog run, dog park, or DIY dog agility course.
Be mindful of toxic landscaping
Consider keeping your pet indoors and off your lawn for at least 24 hours after fertilizing the area. Some of the chemicals found in fertilizers may have long-lasting effects on your pet.
Also, there are several eco-friendly lawn options that can help keep your furry friend in mind. If you have any concerns, talk to your veterinarian on their recommendations for your furry friend.
Keep your eyes peeled for pesky pests
Fleas and ticks can show up anytime and this includes in your own backyard. Consider giving your furry friend some relief with a year-round preventative.
Also, your veterinarian is a great resource to determine which preventative is best for your pets. You don’t want the stress of a flea infestation or Lyme disease for your best friend.
Provide plenty of hydration
Water is incredibly important for dogs of all ages. Whether you’re lounging outside or enjoying a game of toss, your pet’s overall health is dependent on getting the proper amount of hydration.
Consider keeping fresh water available in multiple areas of the yard. Also, for enrichment add items like a water fountain for extra stimulation during playtime.
